Boultawn's Bagelry, Café and Gallery

Hello Hidden Treasure fans!

I'm delighted to bring you the first quarter 2022 Lotus Hidden Treasure. This blog is a collection of my favorite Santa Fe people, places and things, and I share these in hopes of helping support local businesses by spreading the good word. Thank you for humoring me w/ my unsolicited outreach program and creative writing outlet.  ;-)

Quiz:

Do you know what a bialy is? If not, you're about to find out.

Boultawn's bakes fresh bagels every morning that melt in your mouth. And they're the only place in town where I've found bialys, my fave!

Quiz answer:

A bagel is round, while a bialy is flat. A bagel has a hole in the middle, but a bialy has a depression instead of a hole. The depression is filled with ingredients such as chopped onion, breadcrumbs, poppy seeds, and garlic. A bialy comes in a wider range of sizes than a bagel.

Ber and I first discovered bialys in Los Angeles when we lived there 35 years ago, before moving to Santa Fe. We had yet to find any bialys locally until we stumbled upon Boultawn's. It was love at first bite. We started with one bagel & bialy to go on our first visit, and now we buy in bulk because they freeze so beautifully. You can only imagine my husband's delight when he happened to walk in right as a fresh batch of warm bialys were coming out of the oven. Jackpot! He happily snagged 1/2 doz and 1/2 doz bagels to go, in a variety of flavors including Everything, Spinach & Feta, Green Chili & Cheese, and more. I think his face hurt from smiling the entire drive home, as did mine when I saw the loot. The texture of these little nuggets is dreamy: the outsides toast to crispy perfection, and the insides are soft, moist, airy and yummy. Smudge on a little cream cheese, avocado or just good old fashioned butter, and heaven awaits you. The joy I feel seeing these gems awaiting me in my freezer is comical.

Boultawn's has a small cozy dining space/art gallery that features local artists' work. The breakfast/lunch menu is tantalizing, and I look forward to enjoying a civilized sit-down meal there soon.

As is the norm in our beloved albeit quirky Fanta Se, parking isn't ideal. There are a whopping two spots at Boultawn's, so if the Parking Gods don't bless you,  go across the street to the Constellation & Taco Fundacion general lot... and look both ways before crossing!
